Things to Consider Before Buying a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal can be a cook’s best friend, and if you are in the market for a new garbage disposal, then you’ll be pleased to find out that the buying process is a simple one because your choices are limited. However, before purchasing a specific model, here are a few things you’ll need to take into consideration:

Disposal Grinding Horsepower

There are four primary models of garbage disposals on the market today:

  • 1/3rd Horsepower – This lower end model is suitable only for limited use – primarily soft foods, like vegetables. These models also have a frequent tendency to jam, which is frustrating. They are suitable for 1-2 person households.
  • 1/2 Horsepower – Although this model is more powerful than its 1/3rd HP cousin, its use should be limited to households of no more than 2-3 people where usage in the kitchen is low. It is recommended that you look for one with stainless steel grinding components, which will increase the unit’s longevity.
  • 3/4th Horsepower – This garbage disposal model is ideal for households of 4-5 people. It is the model that you will most commonly find in modern day homes. These models are often equipped with more sound dampening features, which reduce the level of noise the unit produces when compared to its lower end cousins. Again, it is recommended that you look for a model with stainless steel grinding components.
  • 1 Horsepower – If you have a large family and produce a lot of waste in the kitchen, then this is the garbage disposal model that you will want to have installed in your home. Capable of handling bones and other tough waste items, this larger capacity garbage disposal has less of a tendency to jam than any other models.

Ideally, you should invest in the highest power model that you can afford. Lower tier models simply do not perform as well, and consequently, you can expect for poorly ground waste to clog your pipes more frequently.

Garbage Disposal Switches & Connections

The majority of today’s garbage disposals are designed to dovetail with a sink’s drain outlet, which makes connecting the two components simple. There are a multitude of connection kits and adaptors available. Many models feature a power cord that is simply plugged into a nearby outlet to power the unit; however, when an outlet is not available, the unit must be hardwired, which can be significantly more expensive.

A continuous feed model features a switch that is generally mounted on the wall nearby. In rarer cases, an air pressure switch may be mounted on the countertop. These air pressure switches are considered safer than traditional flip switches because they guard against shock by isolating the electrical system away from the sink’s source of water. Batch feed garbage disposals do not require the installation or use of a switch. Safety codes in your community will dictate how far away from the sink the electrical switch must be located.

Quiet Operation Garbage Disposals

As a general rule of thumb, the heavier and bigger that a garbage disposer is, the more quietly it will operate – so long as it fits properly underneath your sink. Even though the sound dampening technology used in the design of garbage disposers has improved dramatically in the last 10 years, it is unrealistic to expect your garbage disposal to operate noise free. Under specific sinks, some disposals will be noisier than others due to the amount of vibration they produce. Ideally, you should look for a garbage disposal that features a nylon, insulated grinding chamber, like those produced by WasteKing.

The Warranty

When purchasing a garbage disposal for your home, one of the most important things you’ll need to pay attention to is the manufacturer’s warranty. On average, a top rated food disposal system will last between 10 and 15 years, especially if you take particular care to ensure that it doesn’t become clogged.

Manufacturers’ warranties for garbage disposals range from one year through the lifetime of the unit. One of the best warranties in the industry is the one offered by WasteKing on all of their garbage disposals. Should your disposal system fail due to material defect or mechanical effort during the purchaser’s lifetime, WasteKing will replace the unit for free. This is compliance to the policies provided for by their lifetime warranty.

Similarly, InSinkErator offers a comprehensive 7 year, parts and labor warranty for their Evolution series of garbage disposals. In general, the more confidence a manufacturer has in the product they’ve created, the more comprehensive their warranty will be.

Barbage Disposal Reviews

We created reviews below with additional guidance for different garbage disposer. If you plan to puchase under a garbage disposer online please do so through our review so that your purchase (at no additional cost to you) can support this website – thank you.

InSinkErator Essential XTR 3/4 HP Garbage Disposer

The InSinkErator Essential XTR is capable and robust, making it the perfect garbage disposal for a regular home. The machine is able to tackle tougher foods like beef bones and can easily manage the trash load of a 4-6 person household.

The InSinkErator Evolution Essential XTRis the updated version of the formerly successful InSinkErator Evolution Compact, with some minor changes made to the housing. The Evolution Compact was an effective machine, and the Evolution Essential XTR keeps what works while enhancing what can be bettered. If you ask us, that’s what makes it the best ¾ HP garbage disposal on the market.

One of the solid upgrades is the soundproofing of the device: the SoundSeal insulation. The company promises a much quieter performance compared to the Compact. Positive feedback on multiple forums and customer reviews suggests that the XTR is indeed more silent.

Additionally, the Evolution Essential XTR now comes with attachments by default, including a SinkTop Switchand a power cord. Otherwise, the rest of the features are the same as the good old Evolution Compact. It’s still a ¾ HP garbage disposer with a Dura Drive induction motor that spins the grind chamber at 1725 rpm. There are no changes to the 2X MultiGrind® Technology where food is processed through 2 stages and ground to finer and smaller particles.

What’s the downside? 1725 rpm isn’t necessarily the best rotational velocity on the market, but it’s worth noting that InSinkErator doesn’t make disposals with other velocities either. It seems that, with almost 80 years in the industry under its belt, the company has found the optimal number. They cut down the power used on pace and spend it on torque instead. And it works splendidly!

All in all, the Evolution Essential XTRis our pick for the best food waste disposal for most kitchens. It’s strong and quiet, reasonably priced, and comes with a 6-year limited warranty. We don’t think you’ll find anything better.

Waste King L-111 Garbage Disposal

Waste King’s L-111 comes pre-wired and ready to install. A rubber gasket is provided to seal between the sink and flange. The disposal body is made from a reinforced polymer (a type of plastic) and connects to the flange with a twist-lock connector. The discharge pipe connects to your existing p-trap with a compression fitting—not included. There is a fitting for a dishwasher discharge hose if required. Installation was straightforward with the instructions provided.

The disposal chewed though carrots, celery, and baked beans, although the carrots lingered a little before being completely ground. The baked beans liquified easily, but they had to pushed through the stiff, rubber splash guard. Chicken bones ground up completely, with patience—they were still clinking around in the disposal for several seconds after they seemed to be done. Raw corn cob was the most tenacious material we tried and required a few start-stop cycles to grind completely. It appeared to hang up in such a way that the impellers stopped pushing it into the grind ring. The disposal never jammed and eventually handled everything we threw down it.

GE Continuous Feed Disposal Food Waste Disposer

General Electric’s half-horsepower disposal comes with a convenient rubber gasket to seal the sink flange. However, it does not come with a corded plug, so you’ll need to get one and wire it, or hard wire the unit. The disposal body is made from a reinforced plastic and uses a twist-lock connector on the sink flange. Your existing p-trap should connect easily to the discharge pipe with a compression fitting—not included. A connection for a dishwasher discharge hose is provided. GE lists this unit as “septic safe” in its documentation, and installation was straightforward with the instructions provided.

Like other units on the lower end of the horsepower range, harder items like carrots take a little longer to grind up. Celery hung up in the grind chamber briefly, but cleared quickly on its own. And baked beans presented no problem once they made it through the stiff splash guard. The chicken bones actually ground quite well, and relatively quickly. The most challenging things were the corn cobs which, like some of the other units, required several start-stop cycles to grind completely. The disposal did, however, grind everything in our test without jamming or requiring intervention.

InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1 HP Garbage Disposal

Equipped with not only a strong motor but also with top-notch technologies, the InSinkErator Evolution Excel is a great high-end choice for a luxury kitchen.

Chief among the Evolution Excel’s best qualities is its superior sound insulation. The machine’s patented Sound Seal technology combines advanced insulation and anti-vibration properties to keep the Excel nice and quiet. Not to oversell it but so far, it’s the quietest disposal unit for residential use.

The unit has a 1 HP (1725 rpm) Dura Drive induction motor at its base, allowing the motor to operate with high efficiency and a decreased demand for maintenance. The stainless steel grind chamber and the strong-torque motor can easily handle bones, seeds, and fibrous waste.

The Evolution Excel also features 3-stage MultiGrind technology. What it does is grind the same batch of food waste three times to ensure it’s thoroughly pulverized. This lessens the likelihood of clogging or jamming even further.

However, when clogging does occur, the Evolution Excel is able to detect these incidents by itself. To free up the chamber, it auto-boosts the torque and auto-reverses the spin, fixing the problem before you’ve even noticed anything amiss. The InSinkErator Evolution Excel is covered with a 7-year in-home limited warranty.
