Ceramic Cookware Sets Pros and Cons
There are good things about ceramic cookware that should make you feel excited about. But there are also weaknesses that you should be aware of before you take the plunge and replace all your existing cookware with ceramic ones.
Let’s have a look the advantangeous of ceramic cookware.
Ceramic Cookware Is Temperature Safe
Because of its construction, ceramic cookware can survive temperatures that would mangle any other kind of cookware, meaning that unless your stove gets really hot, (like, super hot,) ceramic cookware will take it.
On the other hand, ceramic is also good at lower temperatures, meaning that ceramic cookware is absolutely fine to use in both the refrigerator and the freezer, which makes storing everything so much simpler. Just wait for it to cool, cover it over and throw it in, without having to fuss about changing containers.
Last but not least, unless it’s got some funky paint on it, (and it won’t) all ceramics are absolutely fine to use in the microwave, too! Now that’s versatility!
Ceramic is naturally nonstick
We’ve all had a favorite pan that we’ve held on to far longer than we probably should have, and watching that coating slowly peel and scratch off is just heart-rending. Now you can put those days behind you, because ceramic is naturally nonstick, without any other treatments or coatings having to be put on it.
Ceramic Cookware Is Easy To Clean
Pretty much all ceramic cookware can be cleaned without worrying about the finish. Because generally, there isn’t one that can come off.
Ceramic Cookware Set is Affordable
Obviously, there’s a lot of price ranges out there, but ceramic pots and pans are usually really good value. Which is good, because there are a few downsides, which we’ll be getting into now.
Ceramic Cookware Is Safe To Use
You might have heard about ceramic cookware dangers, and even if you’re looking at buying a set, you might be asking yourself ‘Is ceramic cookware safe?’
There’s talk of toxicity, fumes when you heat them up too much, all that business.
We’re here to say that all of this is complete bunkum. All ceramic coated and ceramic pots and pans are completely safe, no matter how hot they get. This actually makes them safer than Teflon coated pans, which do emit toxic fumes when overheated.
The only thing you might have to watch out for is pots and pans made in Latin America. They don’t have the same standards of health there, so a very small amount of pots and pans have paint coatings containing lead. Which obviously isn’t ideal.
However, as long as you’re buying it from a reputable company and legitimate dealer, you’re going to be safe, as they’re all tested and held to the same standard.
How above the cons of ceramic cookware?
Ceramic Pots and Pans Tend To Be Heavy
Ceramic pots and pans tend to be heavy and cumbersome, which not only makes it harder to move them around the kitchen and beyond, it also increases the risk of dropping and other accidents.
So be careful when you’re moving these around. Use two hands, okay. The last thing you want is one of these landing on your foot. They’re really heavy.
Ceramic Cookware Susceptible to Damage
Because ceramic can chip and fracture, ceramic cookware is a lot more susceptible to damage than cast iron, copper, steel, or other materials.
Unless treated absolutely perfectly, it’s normal to see ceramic cookware looking a little rough around the edges after a couple of years of standard use.
On top of this, like we said up there, these things are heavy, so dropping them can cause a lot more damage to your kitchen, as well.
In general, I’d expect a decent set of ceramic pots and pans to last around 3 to 5 years of good use.
Solid Ceramic vs Ceramic Coating
The term “ceramic” is used quite loosely in the cookware market. Manufacturers of cookware label their products as “ceramic” but is it ceramic coated or solid ceramic?
We looked at a total of 15 cookware manufactures and found no industry standard labelling. Cookware that was “ceramic coated” was labelled as “ceramic”. And yet, cookware that was “solid ceramic” was also labelled as “ceramic”.
This brought into question why someone would buy a $200 solid ceramic set when they could pay an eighth of the price for ceramic coated cookware. And this confuses buyers.
So What’s The Difference Solid Ceramic vs Ceramic Coating?
Through our research, we found that ceramic coated cookware is made differently. Manufacturers start with an aluminium base. The base is dipped in a bath of synthetic ceramic material which coats the aluminium with ceramic. The surface is left to dry and it usually takes anywhere from 2 to 5 days.
On the other hand, solid ceramic cookware starts with clay and water. This mixture is poured into stainless steel moulds that produce a solid ceramic pot and pan. The cookware is hardened using a kiln and then laid to rest. The hardening process usually involves several rounds and the total manufacturing process takes anywhere from 14 to 25 days.
Solid Ceramic vs Ceramic Coating Cookware, which one is better?
And that’s not an easy answer as there are pros and cons to both.
With ceramic coated cookware, they are usually lighter and “healthier” (more on this in a second). The ceramic coated cookware is soft so you won’t be able to use hard steel utensils on the cookware. If you do so, you might end up scratching the surface and scratching the aluminium underneath. However, these days, the aluminium used is anodized and completely 100% healthy.
As mentioned earlier, solid ceramic cookwares are a lot heavier so you can “feel” the pan while you cook. Another consideration is health. As this cookware is solid ceramic, they do not contain aluminium (although the aluminium on our recommended pots and pans are 100% healthy), so they are healthy as well. With solid ceramic cookware, because they are made of clay and water, they are more prone to chipping. Detailed care must be taken to avoid dropping or banging the cookware against hard surfaces.
Overall, we would recommend safe healthy aluminium cookware that’s coated with ceramic as it’s lighter and less prone to chipping. However, both solid ceramic and ceramic coated cookware would give you the health benefits and are completely 100% PFOA, PTFE, lead and cadmium free.
